Each autumn, be the the "first to fall" with a visit to Eastern America's Highest Town.
Autumn colors arrive early in Beech Mountain because the town is located at 5,506 feet above sea level. While other places in the North Carolina mountains do not reach peak until the latter stages of October, fall foliage in Beech Mountain typically reaches its peak in the first half of October. The colors start to change in the latter half of September and - depending on how early the first frost occurs - the leaves are often at their prettiest the final weekend of September through the first two weekends of October. Fall leaf-peepers have lots of options in the town of Beech Mountain.
The town maintains nearly 30 miles of hiking trails, including eight gorgeous miles of trails at the very top of the mountain in the Emerald Outback trail system. Mountain biking is also an option in the Emerald Outback and on select trails in town.
Other fall activities include canoe rentals on Buckeye Lake, scenic chairlift rides at Beech Mountain Resort, golf packages at the Beech Mountain Club, and spectacular fall driving routes throughout town, as well as nearby in Banner Elk, Valle Crucis, Grandfather Mountain and the Blue Ridge Parkway.
